“Oh, you didn’t need to do that!”
How did this become part of thank you?
The day was Easter Brunch 2026.
My brother-in-law walked into our home, handed me a bottle of wine, and instructed me to set it aside for my husband and me to enjoy another time. It was a thank you for hosting.
Without dropping a beat, I say, “Oh, you did not need to do that!” Then thanked him.
As I stepped aside to put the bottle away, my 7-year-old grandson, who was observing nearby, said, “Grandma, that was so nice that he gave you an offering!”
Like getting hit in the head by a foul ball at a baseball game, the word offering struck me.
Yes! He was making an offering, and the first words I said were to refuse the kindness.
Why do I do that?
The proper response is “Thank you,” or “Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness.”
Thanks to my grandson for mentoring me on being grateful for offerings. What a gift he is! Thank you, PT, for your wisdom, and while I am at it, thank you, Dan and Rose, for your generous and thoughtful offering on Easter!
