Mic Drop Culture

A mutation in the tone of modern conversation?

Communication has become a risky endeavor. With today's cultural undercurrents, conversations can be challenging to navigate! Is someone teasing, or are they trying to provoke an argument?

Snarky, quick-witted comments are becoming more common. Whether you are trying to make a point or share something humorous, if it’s not “mic drop” worthy, are we even heard?

I know I am guilty of this. I love to drop a perfectly timed one-liner with an air of confidence that gets a laugh or makes a point, but in the end, what is it costing me? Will my cheeky sass end up fueling an angry debate, harming a friendship, or setting a bad example for kids?

There is a particular kind of swagger admired in the person who can pull off the “mic drop”, but are these wisecracks and zingers perpetuating a destructive pattern in modern communication?

I believe the frequency and competitive nature of it are.

Mic drop moments are satisfying in an impish kind of way, but at what point do they become sinister? I think it’s a murky boundary between speaker and listener.

Awareness is the first step, I suppose. The second step you may tell me is to remember, “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.”
